East West
Hope In Anguish
2003, Floodgate Records
I don‘t like this record. I‘ll be honest here: it‘s a chore for me to listen to this one all the way through, even though I‘m a longtime East West fan. A step backward from their previous outing, A Light In Guinevere‘s Garden, this record may have better production (from famed California knob-twiddler Dennis Mackay) and more hype, but it‘s a really boring album. Full of one-word titles (‘Vacant‘, ‘Dwell‘, ‘Seven‘, ‘Murderer‘, ‘Envy‘...you get the idea) and equally tired music, anyone went through the late-‘90s boom in loud, detuned Creeds and Godsmacks has been there and done that. Apparently East West are content to seat themselves firmly in their unfortunate rut; let‘s hope they break out.
