It's been a slow week for sweetdisaster; work's been absolute hellishness thanks to losing people in the office to school and such things. If you know anyone in Ottawa who wouldn't mind working midnights typing their little booties off, email us.

It's a given, then, that there's tons of news in the ol' inbox, so we'll get right to it, beginning with some Richmond hardcore!!

Blood & Ink Records down in Virginia has signed Sarasota, FL-based Burden Of A Day, plying a not-exactly-unique blend of hardcore and screamo. You've heard it before, but somehow it never gets old when it's done well. Check 'em out over here, and if you're in Florida, well, so are they:
10.01 Palmetto, FL @ Olympia Theatre
10.14 Bradenton, FL @ The Edge
10.15 Jacksonville, FL @ Murray Hill Theatre
10.22 Lakeland, FL @ First Presbyrterian Church
10.28 Tampa, FL @ The Orpheum
10.29 Miami, FL @ Kaffe Krystal
11.01 Lynchburg, VA @ Elon Ruritan Club
11.02 Dayton, OH @ The Night Owl
11.04 Lafeyette, IN @ Sacred Grounds
11.05 Goshen, IN @ The Post

Ten33 have filled a couple vacant slots in their lineup, with original drummer Zach Nelson returning to the drumstool after a stint in San Diego playing with The Success Story and a second SS member, guitarist Joey Russo, joining the ranks as well. Check out 'Holding On' over at their myspace. Sick tune.

As far as I know, Montreal's Blessed By A Broken Heart have parted ways with B&I, but that's not stopping them from playing a ton of shows with Foreknown(what up Minnesota!):
Sep 29 - Hebron, MD
Sep 30 - Chesapeake, VA
Oct 01 - Spruce Pine, NC
Oct 02 - London, KY
Oct 03 - Augusta, GA
Oct 04 - Marietta, GA
Oct 06 - Ocala, FL
Oct 07 - West Palm Beach, FL
Oct 08 - Clearwater, FL
Oct 09 - Tallahassee, FL
Oct 10 - Mobile, AL
Oct 13 - Conway, AR
Oct 14 - Pittsburg, IL
Oct 15 - Warrensburg, MO
Oct 16 - Emporia, KS
Oct 18 - Jefferson, SD
Oct 19 - Denver, CO
Oct 21 - Ogden, UT
Oct 21 - Colorado Springs, CO
Oct 22 - Twin Falls, ID
Oct 23 - Aberdeen, WA
Oct 27 - Orangevale, CA
Oct 28 - Soquel, CA

Oct 30 - Victorville, CA
Nov 01 - El Cajon, CA
Nov 02 - Las Vegas, NV

From sphereofhiphop: the new LA Symphony epic Disappear Here drops October 4th(that's next Tuesday, fuzzlings); with guest appearances from Murs and Madlib, along with Evidence(Dilated Peoples) and DJ Rhettmatic(Beat Junkies), all the hype says this'll be the biggest record LA Sym crew's ever made. We'll have our review up here ASAP, but take our word for it: this is hot like ouch.

Oh man, this track is the bomb if you're down with the hippity hop: check out 'That Sound' from Ohmega Watts featuring Lightheaded and The Procussions. I feel like it's 1994 listening to this!

Paste Mag is putting on the Paste Rock 'N Reel even in Decatur, GA at the East Decatur Station. Performers include Low, Over The Rhine, Denison Witmer and more, as well as short-film screenings and the creators of homestarrunner on hand for a Q&A. I'd totally go to this! Check the website for details.

Smallman Recs has checked in via email - finally. So, Smallman, where you been hiding in Winnipeg all summer? "To say the least, it was a busy couple of months. Culminating wonderfully in a wrestle off with some of the more distasteful elements from G7 Welcoming Committee. When we settled back to our respective corners (re: neighboring residents informing the local authorities of an indie label turf war happening), we realised it was time to get back to work." Awesome, then. So what's up in the news? Okay then. Smallman's signed a new band(solid indie act by the name of Sylvie, kinda reminds me of Minus The Bear), financed videos for The Reason and Choke(hit up MuchMusic and demand they play them), and all their bands are on tour, so hit up the website. That's that.

A sweetdisaster supporter - hi Kayla - recently attended a couple shows, namely Green Day and the Rufio/Moneen/Yellowcard tour - and took a bunch of pictures!! Check out what a phone cam could do to enhance your concertgoing experience over here! Hint: the ones toward the end(22 pics overall) that look like a huge venue are in fact the Corel Centre Green Day affair - don't ask about the picture of the dog.

Ordinarily there'd be an update for y'all to read tonight, but sweetdisaster Big Cheese was rousted from slumber tonight by a phone call from his boss saying that Canada Post(the government corporation we work for) was calling our place of business today. This is pretty sketchy, so everyone's going into work as early as they can. Big Cheese living in the extreme suburbs, he has to hop the bus in a matter of minutes. So no update tonight. How you doin'??

Check out a band that sounds like The Bled fronted by Thursday singer Geoff Rickley. They're called Post Break Tragedy. Kickin' it oldschool, straight out Jersey!!

The Militia Group(Copeland, Denison Witmer, etc) picked up a band called Fielding recently; I saw the news but didn't think much of it til I discovered that the band features two guys named Adam Ferry and Eric Balmer - both formerly of Plankeye, and it's been a very long time since I had reason to mention Plankeye in this space, considering it's been years since their breakup. Eric's wife Beth also fills out the ranks of Fielding, and it says here that if you liked Plankeye's Relocation album, you'll like this new endeavour. I wasn't huge into that album, personally, but it's all a matter of taste. Discover Fielding over here. [IVM]

Got an email from a sweetdisaster supporter in Winnipeg(what up Armin) saying that the Peg stop of the Strung Out/Comeback Kid/Bane tour was just ridiculous, so hopefully you have your ticket to the Ottawa show this Friday. I don't, but that's okay. Also, CBK vocalist Scott Wade apparently referenced the now-defunct Figure Four from the stage, saying something to the effect of, "If you want Figure Four, email xpipesx@hotmail.com", or something close to that. Not sure if this is a joke(sure sounds like it), but hey, you never know.

The newly-licensed Life In Your Way just showed up at sweetdisaster HQ. Like I mean, my-roommate-just-walked-in-with-the-mail showed up. Awesome.

If you were waiting eagerly for the upcoming Killswitch Engage live DVD, well, wait some more; it's been bumped back to a November 22nd release through Roadrunner Records. Sorry 'bout that. [theprp]

Whoa, a new Demon Hunter track is up on ye olde internet; it's called 'Ribcage', and I've always been a DH fan in the past, but if their upcoming album The Triptych sounds like this, I might be elevated to Obsessive Fanboy status come October 25th, when the record drops. Check out 'Ribcage' over here.

Horse the Band(crazy, those cats) have been added to the Dillinger Escape Plan/Between the Buried and Me tour going from early November through the middle of December. Awesome bill.

P.O.D. are going out on the Fall Brawl tour later this year - with Staind and Taproot. Ugh. I'd go for Payable, and that's it.

Along with a soundtrack composed largely by Explosions in the Sky, the Billy Bob Thornton-starring Friday Night Lights football flick also features 'New Noize' by The Refused, much to my surprise. I know this because my roommate and I are watching it as these words are scribed. And I think I may have heard Public Enemy's 'Don't Believe The Hype', but I can't be sure on that one. Iffy.

No Innocent Victim are drawing ever-closer to the release of To Burn Again, out on November 8th; the title track is up for listening on their purevolume page. Drummer Jason Dunn also runs this label called, um, Facedown Records(yeah them), and a ton of their bands are on tour as you read this - check out facedownrecords.com for all the scoop.

Picked up the new issue of Alternative Press downtown last night out of sheer boredom, and Tooth & Nail Records ads take up like seventy-five percent of the first ten pages. Someone is spending serious money here. Also, a tidbit of which which we weren't formerly aware: the artwork for the upcoming Underoath re-release was done by Converge frontman Jake Bannon. Reason enough to purchase it right there.

Project 86's new album And The Rest Will Follow is out Tuesday, and there's a pretty slick website to initiate the sleepers to this big rock attack. Go check that out. Nice colour scheme - I have a t-shirt with that brown/light-blue thing going on. I'm awesome.

For their tenth anniversary, Hatebreed are putting on the 10 Years of Brutality tour(does everything they do have to have 'brutal' in it somewhere? Just asking). Joining the Connecticut veterans will be Most Precious Blood, Full Blown Chaos, If Hope Dies and more. Here's the itinerary thus far:11/1 Burlington, VT @ Higher Ground
11/2 Manchester, NH @ Bombshelter
11/3 Buffalo, NY @ Showplace Theatre
11/4 Cleveland, OH @ Peabody's
11/5 Louisville, KY @ The Gate
11/6 Columbus, OH @ Newport Music Hall
11/9 Birmingham, AL @ 4th & 16th Space
11/10 Jacksonville, FL @ Fuel
11/14 Charleston, SC @ Music Farm
11/15 Spartanburg, SC @ Groundzero
11/16 Fayetteville, NC @ Jester's Pub
11/17 Jacksonville, NC @ Planet Rock
11/18 Baltimore, MD @ Sonar
11/23 Orono, ME @ Ushuaia
[lambgoat]

Boston hardcore band The Hope Conspiracy have been pretty inert the last year or so, but they're back at it, writing a new album that will see daylight in 2006. Woohoo!

Great metal show hitting Babylon downtown November 4th. Check it: A Life Once Lost and The End with headliners The Black Dahlia Murder. My ears will never be the same again. And the new ALOL record is really good: metal, hardcore and guitar solos! Awesome.

Speaking of crazily loud bands, Baltimore kids Misery Index have split with their label, Nuclear Blast. It's all on good terms, though; no crap-talking, internet idiocy and the like. MI have completed five new songs, with titles like 'Outsourcing Jehovah, 'Conquistador' and 'Antithesis'. Hooray for wordy metal bands.

Comeback Kid. Strung Out. More. A week from today, September 30th. Hit up punkottawa for details. Awesome.

EXTREMELY interesting news to kick off your weekend: Bad Religion are listed on their label's website as playing here in Ottawa, November 17th at the Capital Music Hall. The entire Canadian tour(Ottawa's the last stop) looks pretty solid, and there are unsubstantiated rumours that Anti-Flag are opening up. Keep an eye on punkottawa.com.

Good Lord. Throwdown touring with Soulfly? Geez. Tour dates over here, if you're interested. I'm not. Boo Soulfly. [hxc]

Hilarious: Stretch Arm Strong were joined onstage at CMJ in New York City last weekend by the legendary George Clinton(yeah, that one). I would have loved to see that.

Spitfire, having reformed earlier this year(the first band I saw at Cornerstone, doncha know), have re-signed with their last official label, Hamilton, ON's Goodfellow Records. A brand-new album will out early in '06, and the label's website says, and I quote, "Be prepared to be melted." Good enough for me. I'm stoked.

A little rap news: Pettidee(he was featured on DJ Maj's second mixtape album a few years back) has signed with Beatmart Recordings, founded by Todd Collins of Gotee Records fame. This is all good until you hear that Pettidee's debut will be called Thug Love. Ouch. [cmcentral]

Hawk Nelson: cute little pop-punkers gone all Hollywood on us. Geeeeeeeeeeeeeez.

I don't care who says what about cliched, overdone metal: our boys As I Lay Dying(see interview above, can't possibly miss it), took the top honours at the San Diego Music Awards. Amazing, considering the competition: Unwritten Law and Switchfoot, among a couple others. Congratulations, dudes. [truthexplosion]

Local boys The Fully Down have posted two new tracks from their upcoming Fearless Records debut Don't Get Lost In A Movement on their purevolume site. As expected, killer tunes.

Props go out to Dashboard Confessional frontman Chris Carrabba; last weekend when the band were in Toronto opening for some piddly little band called U2(oh yeah those guys), Carrabba took time out to play a club show in downtown TO for about a thousand people, with the proceeds going to Hurricane Katrina relief in the southern US. Apparently it was a full-on two-hour set. Nice.

Roadrunner Records is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year by doing something unique: pretty much everyone who's ever been in any band anywhere near Roadrunner have collaborated on a bunch of new songs. To hear this metal madness and see the huge list of participants, roll on over here.

Check this out: Alexisonfire covering Moneen's 'Passing of America'! Awesome. The two bands will release a split on the label, Dine Alone, in the near future. And I saw Moneen a couple weeks ago and their drummer Peter Krpan is one of the smoothest, most agile drummers I've ever seen in my life. Holy cow.

Well now. In the Underoath interview that you all hopefully read when we published it a while back, it was mentioned that Minus the Bear's Matt Bayles was hopefully going to produce Underoath's next record - not no more: it's been reported that Adam D(Killswitch Engage guitarist, producer of a whole lot of records you love) will instead handle production duties. The album will be out next year.

If you're not pumped up about the Strung Out/Comeback Kid show on the 30th(that would be a week tomorrow, kiddies), then you must not have a pulse.

If you've never heard of those bands, c'mon out to Babylon(317 Bank) and find out what the deal is. You know you waaaaaaaaanna. And read this here for the lowdown on Strung Out(thanks, chartattack).

Anyway.

Is anyone else excited about the return of NHL hockey? I am. I know my brother Dan is, even though he roots for the hated(and, this year, pathetic) Maple Leafs of Toronto. Email us with your picks for who's gonna take it all this year! Maybe we'll have a pool or something. It seems to be the cool thing to do.

Hey, if you're not doing anything tomorrow night(September 23rd), After All Your Planets Done(ex-Is Grace Enough, who had a good two-year run) are rocking their first Ottawa show at Mavericks(221 Rideau downtown) alongside Daggers Bearing Notes, No Other Way and three other local bands. Eight bucks, eight pm. C'mon out.

Australian band Falling Into Apathy have posted some songs from their new EP Attacking A Weakened Heart; they're being compared to Alexisonfire, Shai Hulud, I Killed the Prom Queen and Avenged Sevenfold. I like all those bands, save A7X, who I highly dislike. So if you're into any or all of them, give FIA a listen over here. I hope purevolume works for you, because it won't load for nothing this morning. [noisetheory]

In further Aussie news, The Suicide Machines are touring down there:
Thursday Oct 6 Next, Melbourne
Friday Oct 7 Enigma Bar, Adelaide
Saturday Oct 8 Cambridge, Newcastle
Sunday Oct 9 Annandale Hotel, Sydney
Wednesday Oct 12 The Rev, Brisbane

As are On Broken Wings:
THURS SEPT 29 : Next, Melbourne (18+)
FRI SEPT 30 : Enigma Bar, Melbourne (AA)
SAT OCT 1 : Arthouse, Melbourne (18+)
SUN OCT 2 : Stonecutters, Melbourne (AA)
WED OCT 5 : The Rev, Brisbane (18+)
THURS OCT 6 : Youth Activities Centre, Byron Bay (AA)
FRI OCT 7 : The Cambridge, Newcastle (18+)
SAT OCT 8 : Spectrum, Sydney (18+)
SUN OCT 9 : Embassy Hotel, Penrith (AA)
See that October 6th date in Byron Bay? That's where intrepid sweetdisaster co-creater The Flikkemizer and his lovely wife Kelly moved in July; go read their blog to the left-hand side there.

Hey, this just in: Protest the Hero are something else. And they're still in high school! Sheesh. Pay particular attention to the singer, not that he won't grab your attention with his almost-supernatural talent anyway. Wow.

Geffen Records has really dropped the ball with their latest Nirvana-related marketing ploy. Let Kurt rest in peace, and focus on your artists who are not eleven years dead, hmm? Geez.

I'm pretty sure it isn't serious, but this piece, written by Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida, is entertaining - and poignant. Plus OLP's new album is pretty solid, from what little I've heard of it.

Apparently Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and U2's Bono, while both bands were touring through Toronto last weekend, traded guest appearances, with Vedder joining U2 for 'Ol' Man River' and Bono returning the favour on a cover of Neil Young's 'Rockin' In The Free World'. I'd have lost my mind if I'd seen either of those. Maybe Vedder will come to Ottawa with U2 in November and I can see it then. But that's highly unlikely.

The new Switchfoot album, Nothing Is Sound, appeared in the mail yesterday here at sweetdisaster HQ. The album itself is a fine piece of work, with the band amplifying what they do well(balladry and stadium rock), but my beef is with Sony Records, who decided, in their major-label obtuseness, to plaster the CD case itself(not the removable plastic wrap) with a huge Switchfoot sticker and a giant DualDisc sticker. What the...? The whole thing is just a botch, and done to one of my absolute favourite bands. Atrocious. Thanks hugely to longtime sd.com supporter Heidi for the gift, by the way.

The Shins have started work on their third album, 2003's Chutes Too Narrow having launched them to stardom. I'm excited. [Relevant]

A guy who produced Good Charlotte's terrible excuse for original music has been hired on to do Taking Back Sunday's Warner debut. I hope he doesn't wreck it.

The American Music Awards go down November 22nd, and I couldn't care less, but just a question: how does Mariah Carey lead all nominees with four? She's still alive?

Their contract with Sony over, Korn have jumped ship to EMI/Virgin Records, who will release their first studio album in two years later this year. I wonder if they'll ever make another album as good as their first two.

Speaking of has-beens, Disturbed's new album Ten Thousand Fists(give me a break!) is out soon. I don't care.

Two of the hottest rappers alive right now, Kanye West and Common, will tour together this fall, with openers Keyshia Cole(whoever that is) and some woman who won American Idol, a show I despise so much I won't even name her, for her own protection. Tour dates can be seen over here.

I have no idea how I didn't know this, but I Am The Avalanche, the new band from former Movielife singer Vinnie Caruana, also features former Further Seems Forever guitarist Brandon Swanson. The band's self-titled debut comes out next week on Drive-Thru Records. I had no idea. You can stream the entire thing this week over here. I personally like what I hear. [AP]

When Beloved called it quits last winter, it wasn't long at all before frontman Josh Moore hooked up with Classic Case, along with ex-members of Glassjaw, and now their first record is coming out October 18th. Check out an e-card over here to get a taste.

The Deftones B-sides collection(CD and DVD formats both) coming out in a couple weeks, and it includes covers of - get this now - Jawbox, Lynyrd Skynyrd and '90s soul singer Sade(remember 'Smooth Operator'? Yeah, her). That is awesome, and I can't wait to hear it.

A couple years ago for another 'zine I reviewed a Black Flag tribute album that Initial Records put out; it featured the likes of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Burnt By The Sun and more giving old Flag tunes a revamping, and now Reignition Recs is planning to re-issue the compilation, adding the following bands:
The Black Dahlia Murder('I've Heard It Before')
Bleeding Through('My War')
Drowningman('Loose Nut')
Remembering Never('Spray Paint the Walls')
Most Precious Blood('Rise Above')
Zao('Black Coffee').
Wow. No release date, but just...wow. [hxc]

One last bit for today: Most Precious Blood's new album Merciless is up for streaming over here. What a great band.

Some LA Symphony news for the unwashed masses: the five-man wreck-rap crew will be performing tonight(September 20th) at the Hurricane Katrina benefit show in Hollywood alongside the likes of DJ Motiv8(Black Eyed Peas) and a slew of others, and this fall they're hitting the road with Tha Alkaholiks...wait, haven't they gone on at least two 'farewell tours'? That makes no sense, but this is mainstream hiphop we're talking here, so the rules don't apply. Those tour dates:
09/27/05 - Las Vegas, NV - Jillians
09/28/05 - Los Angeles, CA - The Viper Room
09/29/05 - San Diego, CA - Belly Up
09/30/05 - Gardena, CA - Normandie Casino
10/01/05 - Ventura, CA - Ventura Theater
10/04/05 - San Luis Obispo, CA - SLO
10/05/05 - San Francisco, CA - DNA Lounge
10/07/05 - Portland, OR - Hawthorne Theater
10/08/05 - Seattle, WA - Chop Sueys
10/09/05 - Spokane, WA - Big Easy
10/10/05 - Boise, ID - Big Easy
10/11/05 - Salt Lake City, UT - Velvet Room
10/13/05 - Fort Collins, CO - Aggie Theater
10/14/05 - Denver, CO - Bluebird Theater
10/15/05 - Lincoln, NE - The Digz
LA Sym's new epic Disappear Here drops October 4th; we'll have our review up shortly.

We posted a little nostalgic bit about MxPx last week, and here's some more: I'm generally not big on acoustic projects from bands of any genre, not because I dislike acoustic music(the wide section of Caedmon's Call in my record collection says otherwise), but because overall, they're not that great. That being said, MxPx's AC/EP(amazing title!) that came out last year contains some true gems, from the acoustic reworking of 'Grey Skies Turn Blue' from their new studio album Panic! to the back-to-the-vault rendition of 'Invitation to Understanding'(from 1998's Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo). 'Quit Your Life' is nice too. Go find this mini-album! Go!!

From the ol' email inbox: after getting their lineup solidified with two new - and well-fitted - replacements in drummer Jesse Sprinkle(Poor Old Lu and guitarist Matt Redmond(Beloved), Dead Poetic are gonna spend the rest of this year writing new stuff in preparation for invading a studio in the new year and putting out a new record. Keep tabs on deadpoetic.com for all the little niggling details that music nerds obsess over. Quoth the band: "We have big things planned for this next step, and have never been so excited about bringing you this music. We promise not to disappoint." Oh, as well, Jesse's solo material now has a home over on myspace.

Time to start preparing for the massive, massive show September 30th at Babylon(317 Bank St.) as Strung Out are coming, bringing with them Bane, Comeback Kid and The Reason. Maybe this will be the fortuitous day that sweetdisaster will get our elusive CBK interview!

Canada has lost one of our punk icons: Edmonton's SNFU are calling it quits. Guitarist Marc Belke, the only continual member since the band's inception in 1982, posted this on their website: "It is with mixed emotions that I announce my departure from SNFU, as it has been the biggest part of my life for almost twenty years. It's my feeling that SNFU has done everything that we had set out to do." [aversion]

I saw this in the newspaper over the weekend, and aversion has more on Tom Waits suing the pants off General Motors' Scandinavian division for allegedly using a soundalike of Waits(is there such a thing?) in as series of TV ads. "Apparently the highest compliment our culture grants artists nowadays is to be in an ad - ideally naked and purring on the hood of a new car," Waits said in a statement. "I have adamantly and repeatedly refused this dubious honor."

Veruca Salt, whose last album Resolver came out in 2000, are returning - well, sort of. The classic tandem up front of Louise Post and Nina Gordon has been halved to just Post for the new incarnation(Gordon wasn't part of Resolver either. A full-length is coming next year, but for now, if you go see VS or visit their website, you can pick up an EP called Lords of Sounds and Lesser Things. I remember when Veruca Salt ruled - when I was seventeen.

Ooooooh, this is good: after we slapped up a new Boysetsfire demo a few days ago, we have word now that they've signed with Equal Vision Records. The first release will be a re-release(is that grammatically correct?) of After the Eulogy, originally released in 2000 on Victory Records. Following that there'll be Before the Eulogy, a standard B-sides/oddities collection, and then there'll be a new album called The Misery Index: Notes from the Plague Years early next year. I'm stoked, judging by that demo.

Yellowcard's next album, due in January, has a name: Lights and Sounds. And sweetdisaster Big Cheese has a new Yellowcard sticker on his desk from the show last week. Awesome.

Remember Harvey Danger? Album called Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone? Huge, huge radio single called 'Flagpole Sitta'? I sure do! After they came and went, they recorded a reportedly-brilliant sophomore album - and then disappeared. Until now, with the release of Little by Little, reviewed over here. Caution to our more easily-offended readers: there's some questionable language. Okay? Okay.

Showbread(crazy spazz-metallic-core on Solid State) and Every New Day(ex-skatepunk-turned-metalcore from Winnipeg) are reportedly touring later this fall. More on that as it comes. [hardcorechristian]

Happy birthday to us!

sweetdisaster.com is two years old today.

If you've been a reader since the start, we thank you profusely and without ceasing. If you've been around any lesser than that, we still thank you. If you hadn't noticed before, there's nothing in the way of advertising - officially - around here; we do this simply because we can. We'll just keep on truckin' that way.

Personally, I wanna thank Dave Flikkema and Galen Broaddus, two highly-talented individuals - and both expecting their first children in the next few months. Go figure. Thanks, guys. Everyone who's contributed news or writing to the 'zine, thank you all.

And to God, from whom everything flows: all thanks. We'll do this as long as You'll use us.

Today's Essential Listening: Victorville, CA's Lorene Drive. They're somehow related to an old friend of mine out there, and they stand out from the purevolume morass with good production and solid songwriting. Check them out.

If you're in the Toronto area planning to hit Canada's Wonderland tonight for the triple bill featuring Relient K, Hawk Nelson and Christian-contemporary music kingpin Michael W. Smith, take note: the event has been postponed til next May. The following is a press statement: "Out of respect for the current major issues facing the United States, including the need for resources to be diverted to Hurricane Katrina victims, the increasing gas prices and the ongoing war in Iraq, the bands and the promoter have collectively decided that is in the best interests of all parties to postpone this concert to a time that is more appropriate for celebrating. Please join us in our support efforts and parties for these issues. The new date for the Fall Celebration will now be rolled into Spring Celebration on May 20th, 2006." Well then.

In further southern-Ontario concert news, Thousand Foot Krutch's first headlining tour in support of The Art of Breaking(also featuring Hawk Nelson, Dizmas and 4th Avenue Jones) will be in the area in October: the 13th in Barrie(info over here and the 14th in Toronto(info here). It'll be a great show, even if the new TFK isn't that great, from what I've heard. Sadly, there are no plans for the tour to come to Ottawa, to no one's surprise.[musicrefuge]

Apparently Spoken did a Cyndi Lauper cover for their new record. I must hear it.

According to IVM, The Chariot will be putting out an EP in January, though that's unconfirmed by us here at sweetdisaster. We'll work on that. We can say that the Chariot had one of the best shows going at Cornerstone in July(pics of Cstone coming soon, we promise).

In(kind of) related news, Chariot vocalist Josh Scogin's old band Norma Jean are heading up the VelocirapTOUR with support from The Handshake Murders, Still Remains, Haste the Day and Darkest Hour; the tour kicks off October 8th in Memphis - no Canadian dates listed. The website's over here.

New Albums In Stores check: Stretch Arm Strong, Switchfoot, The Juliana Theory and Nodes of Ranvier.

The Unfolding(formerly Josiah) have signed with Future Destination Records; the debut metal opus will be out next year. Woohoo!

Found an interview with MxPx guitarist Tom Wisnewski from this past Warped tour over here. Good read - and it confirms what I thought: their touring guitarist this summer was indeed Seth Roberts of Watashi Wa fame. I knew he looked familiar! And speaking of new albums out, MxPx's newest, Panic!, is stellar.

According to this, there's a "very real possibility" of a Strongarm reunion, which would please us here at sweetdisaster very greatly. Wow. That'd be something.

This article is the first credible-sounding story I've seen concerning former Korn gutarist Brian 'Head' Welch and his conversion to Christianity, resulting in his leaving the band. Kudos to Rolling Stone for having the class to speak of such matters in a classy, non-condescending way, which is way more than what most of these online 'zines are doing. I still think Welch's upcoming album Invitations Have Been Sent To All stands a decent chance of being brutal, but you never know. [rockrebel]

Rumours are surfacing that Weezer, following their touring for the new album Make Believe, are gonna call it quits. We'll believe that when we see it. [MTV]

Some more high-profile news(never hurts, in moderation): former Blink-182 guitarist Tom DeLonge disappeared from public view when Blink announced its demise earlier this year - til now: Angels & Airwaves is his new project, also on Geffen Records apparently, and a new album is coming, back up by a whole bunch of DeLonge's braggadocio. You can read about it over here, if you're so inclined.

So this morning at work I'm listening to an album I burned last weekend, an album I've bought and sold at least twice before, an album that brings me back to tenth grade at Redeemer High here in metropolitan Ottawa: MxPx's 1995 breakout Teenage Politics, featuring the hit title track and the still-played-every-show 'Punk Rawk Show'. I hadn't heard this album in a long, long time, and while it did bring back floods of memories, it also points the way - directly - to the band's future, which at that point I'm sure they couldn't have envisioned, being freshly rechristened(remember Magnified Plaid??) and being on a brand-new label that no one outside of Christian-rock circles had heard of(Tooth & Nail). Politics had everything that became MxPx standard fare: great harmonies(though singer Mike Herrera's voice was still a little sketchy back then), miniature guitar leads, solid drumming, and that quintessential fast/mid-tempo timing that characterizes pop-punk, topped off with their boldly-Christian(later toned down) lyrical viewpoint. Teenage Politics is today's Essential Listening.

Well then.

Before we really get started with today's news, my brother Dan, alongside being hilarious, posted a lovely photo montage of a llama ranch located just north of our adopted hometown of Morrisburg, Ontario(fifty minutes south of Ottawa). Check the footage here!

Aight, now the news.

October 4th sees the release of a special edition of Underoath's They're Only Chasing Safety; the new version has four unreleased tracks and a DVD with two hours of live footage and all the usual bells and whistles. Nice little package. I'm still excited about the Beloved DVD dropping in December. [absolutepunk]

It's been a very long time since there was anything newsworthy concerning The Ataris(maybe never, in this magazine's case), but apparently there are some murky legal issues surrounding the band's upcoming album that could delay it to the extreme - or nix its release totally. Innneresting.

We reported a while back that after over ten years, Green Day have re-taken control of their old Lookout! Records material(namely, Kerplunk!, 1,039 Smoothed-Out Slappy Hours and a few EPs) in a dispute with Lookout! over royalties; apparently the label is looking at shutting down an operation that once boasted $10 million a year in gross revenue thanks to the two Green Day LPs and Operation Ivy's 1989 album that also sold half a million copies. Check out a very interesting - albeit very long - article about all this over here.

Mae are touring with the likes of Foo Fighters and Weezer right now. Just thought I'd mention that. They deserve every success they encounter.

The Juliana Theory's new record Deadbeat Sweetheart is a great piece of work. I know. I own it. So should all y'all. Some of the material rivals that of Emotion Is Dead, and that's saying something, as masterful as that record was. If you're into streaming(and who isn't, really? c'mon now), the entire dang thing is up for streaming over here. Get to it.

The Suicide Machines have tapped Stretch Arm Strong and two other acts as their openers on their east coast/southern US tour in November. I devoutly hope this hits Ottawa, especially since Stretch had to bail on their Canadian mini-tour last month.

We're pretty apolitical here at sweetdisaster, but this sure is funny: hit up Google, type in 'Failure' and then hit the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' button. Wow. Overt.

Remember Billy Talent? We sure do! Matter of fact, there's an interview we conducted with them at the height of their fame(fall of 2003) over in our Interviews section, but that's not the point: they have a new demo up over on their myspace page.

Yellowcard were in town earlier this week and put on a great show - but Toronto had the edge, because their crowd got the word that the new Yellowcard album will be out January 24th of '06. It'll probably be full of catchy pop-punk goodness much like Yellowcard's debut album. And I'll more than likely love it.

I found links to two new boysetsfire demos, and one of them is crap. The other one is over here and brings the ruckus like they used to, Delaware style! Let's do this!! *hits the pit* Whatever.

Former Underoath vocalist Dallas Taylor's new band Maylene and the Sons of Disaster have gotten their act together with a new website(go find it; I'm too lazy to link this one) and an album coming next month already on Mono Vs Stereo Recordings. That was fast. The one song they have up over here sounds like they've - amazing! - channelled a heavier version of The Black Crowes, and the picture looks like an old ZZ Top album cover. I like it!

'Absentimental', one of the many cleverly-worded titles on Norma Jean's latest album O God, The Aftermath, has had a video made for it, which you can see with your own two eyes over here. Quite the invigorating piece of work. I'd just like to point out that Norma Jean vocalist Cory Brandan also did time with Living Sacrifice a few years back, and LS, even after their demise, still kill me. [saveyourscene]

7 Angels 7 Plagues are gonna be doing a few reunion shows this winter, one in Milwaukee confirmed and others as yet not nailed down. A couple of members went on to form Misery Signals after 7A's demise.

Finis. More album reviews coming over the weekend. Have a great one, wherever you are.

Site hasn't been updated in a few days - our bad - and won't be until tomorrowish. Again, our bad. Work before pleasure, etc etc. Some quick notes: Yellowcard killed it Monday with Moneen and Rufio in tow, and last night at Babylon Welsh rockers Funeral For A Friend put on a very solid show. Openers Hostage Life and Armor For Sleep were tight to boot.

New interview up with As I Lay Dying; new content in the reviews section as well. And speaking of that, Speed Not Steel's 'Days Away' is purely mindblowing. Go listen to it over here.

Thanks for sticking by us. Peace.

Another one bites the dust: 44-year-old NHL legend Mark Messier called it quits after a twenty-five-year career today, burning another bridge in my personal links to the NHL that's past and gone. With Vincent Damphousse and Scott Stevens packing it in last week, they're falling over like dominos. Sheesh.

If anyone's still into Trapt(fun band!), their entire new album Someone In Control is up for streaming for the time being over at purevolume.

The fight over the future of NYC venue CBGB's is about to move into the courts: seven days after the Bowery Residents' Committee(the owner of the building, of which CB's is the lone commercial tenant) served the eviction notice, the club's owner, Hilly Kristal, is vowing to fight on.

Project 86 have another couple of new tracks from the upcoming opus And The Rest Will Follow up at their purevolume site. Their last album, Songs to Burn Your Bridges By, is slowly growing on me of late, after initial rejection. I'm just bitter because they'll never go back to the Drawing Black Lines era. Hmph.

My boy Nick DC hit up last night's big rock show with The Used, Underoath, Alexisonfire and Day of Contempt; the show was apparently "amazing", minus the absence of Head Automatica(who, by the way, released one of the best pop albums of the year with Decadence). Day of Contempt "sounded liked crap". I bet it's because they don't sound like Throwdown anymore.

Everlea are a Kingston, Ontario-based band, and I really like them. I wouldn't have mentioned this, probably, as things slip my mind a lot, but they're on the front page of purevolume.com, and I like their sound a lot. Go check 'em out. Yay Can-rock!

Way to screw it up: a few people who bought the new Audio Adrenaline album instead got an unexpected copy of Switchfoot's Nothing Is Sound. Good Lord. C'mon, people. Behold, the statement from EMI CMG(what an idiotic name for a record company): "Our manufacturer made this error on a very small number of CDs that we learned of late last week. With the quantity found today in Baltimore we believe we could have every defective CD identified. However, there could be a few - as in less than twenty - more out there. If you're a Switchfoot fan and you get one of these, please realize that this is not a cool thing for them... or us. If you purchase one of these defective AA CDs and return it to us(before you rip it please) postmarked prior to 9/13, we will send you a free Audio A cd in addition to a free Switchfoot CD when that album streets two weeks from today." Niiiiiiice. [JFH]

Speaking of Switchfoot, they're touring this fall with Reeve Oliver, Eisley and some band called Augustana. Wonder if that's coming to Ottawa.

Rise Against are heading back into the Blasting Room in Fort Collins, CO(owned by Descendents drummer Bill Stevenson) to record the follow up to Siren Songs For the Counter-Culture. Geffen is aiming for a summer 2006 release date. [absolutepunk]

New Jersey's Life In Your Way, a hardcore-underground veteran band, just took a step up: Floodgate Records has partnered with the band's label(Indianola) to rerelease their latest Ignite and Rebuild into the Christian market while Indianola maintains the general-market distribution. Good for the LIYW guys, who've been compared in the past to the legendary Shai Hulud. [pastepunk]

Stretch Arm Strong are releasing Free At Last in north American on the 13th(that's next Tuesday, kiddies), and a variety of other labels in other parts of the world; there's also a new website in full effect, featuring the new video for 'The Sounds of Names Dropping'. Go check all that goodness out! And this interview!

Petra is coming! October 12th! Dominion-Chalmers United Church downtown!! I'm excited.

I'd forgotten, but MuteMath, one of the brightest, best new bands to come out of the Nashville Christian Machine in a long time, are from New Orleans, and as such were directly affected by last week's horrific events. Singer Paul Meany: "Well, to say the least, this past week has been extremely emotional for all of us, but thankfully we're all fine. If you've been watching the news, I can tell you we're definitely some of the fortunate ones. We've had a place to reside with our immediate families until it's safe to return home. We're hoping to be able to get in sometime this week to at least assess any damage to our homes, which we're still unsure about. To all of you who have been emailing or calling us to find out how we're doing, thank you for caring. The reaction and response of so many people on the outside of this disaster has been amazing. New Orleans has essentially, through the course of one hurricane, been transformed into a small third world country. It will take more than a government program to rebuild. Anything any one of us can do to directly help the victims, I think, is what s going to make the difference." To that end: go here and here. As someone on the radio said last night, don't forget about these people - because you may already have. Remember that. [JFH]

In an interesting move, Thrice have put a portion - a portion, now - of their first single from the upcoming Vheissu album, 'Image of the Invisible', as a 'locked portion'; the entire track will be 'unlocked' after 100,000 downloads. Weird. You can do your part over here. [punknews]

Essential Listening for today, September 6th: Municipal Waste have busted out of Richmond, Virginia(home to about five thousand killer bands) with their Earache Records debut Hazardous Mutation; this is rad '80s thrash - and check out the cover art!! Listen up! Oh, and this band also features former Burnt By The Sun drummer Dave Witte, if that's an extra incentive.

I can't remember if we posted this already, but Cartel's new album Chroma is up in its entirety for streaming over here. Great rock and roll.

Quick show update: next Monday night barring change of plans will find me at Club SAW(67 Nicholas, downtown) watching Breather Resist and Coliseum - and if you're sitting there going, "Um, who are they?", they're both real loud bands. As well, a good Ottawa band called Die Nameless(coming correct out of the mean streets of KANATA!! YEAH!) are opening up.

Apparently those who bought Hellfest tickets via PayPal or through their local record stores - a good percentage - are still awaiting refunds, while those who got their ducats through the venue have been refunded already. More on that as news gets out.

If you're in California/Nevada, you might wanna check this out: Flogging Molly are taking Maxeen and Canada's own Danko Jones on a small tour:
9.13.05 SAN FRANCISCO, CA The Fillmore
9.14.05 SAN DIEGO, CA House of Blues
9.15.05 ANAHEIM, CA House of Blues
9.16.05 LAS VEGAS, NV House of Blues
9.17.05 LOS ANGELES, CA House of Blues

pastepunk dot com: still among the very best reviews in the punk/hardcore scene!

By the way, Green Day was in town last with Jimmy Eat World in tow; Jimmy played well as the opening act, and then Berkeley, CA's finest simply destroyed for two solid hours. Granted, they didn't find three and a half minutes during those two hours for 'When I Come Around', but it was by far the most fun stage show I've seen in a long time. There's your quickie review.

Pluto Records' upstarts Divide the Day were dealt a setback over the weekend when their van and trailer were stolen in California; the van was recovered in pretty bad shape, but the trailer, safe to say, is gone, along with the band's equipment and merchandise for the tour they in fact still started yesterday. Good for them. Here's where they'll be:
Sep 6 Lawrence, KS @ The Bottleneck
Sep 7 Cleveland, OH @ The Hi-Fi Club
Sep 8 Levittown, NY @ Club 2686
Sep 9 Worcester, MA @ The Palladium (SkateFest w/ CKY, Every Time I Die, The Red Chord, Bane, Daughters, The Chariot, Haste The Day, High On Fire and more!)
Sep 10 Brooklyn, NY @ Boogaloo Bar
Sep 11 Long Island, NY @ The Ultrasound Lounge
Sep 13 Springfield, MO @ Nathan P. Murphy's

In case anyone wants to see a picture of sweetdisaster's Big Cheese slopping out potato and macaroni salad at a church function, check this out. Ha.

We have a very in-depth interview coming up(among all the other things that the aforementioned Big Cheese has yet to write) with Val Hellman, formerly a horn player for short-lived ska band The W's(the name might ring some bells); the band had a short run in the Christian-contemporary/punk rock arena before their demise, and we won't lie: the piece we're working on will offend some people, will make some other people say, "It's about time some of this was talked about", and will - hopefully - enlighten everyone. Keep an eye out.

From the desk of newly-minted sweetdisaster correspondent Rachelle: Bedouin Soundclash are coming strong out of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, with a debut album on the Union Label Group and a huge Warped Tour this past summer during wich they converted almost every last person who saw them, bands and fans alike(Exclaim! magazine, in their Warped Tour diary, featured a sidebar specifically concerning Bedouin's dominance). The three-piece craft an explosive mix of rock, reggae and gospel, and the single that made their name, 'When The Night Feels My Song', was aided - interestingly - by Zellers'. Yeah, Canadians, that Zellers', the low-end department store. How 'bout that. Full story over here.

Hey, kids.

Edmonton and outlying areas, pay attention: Harvest Moon Festival 2K5 is going down next weekend in your 'hood. Check the lineup of mainstagers(sickness all around): Project 86, Thousand Foot Krutch, Starfield, Anberlin, Greg Sczebel, LA Symphony, Mute Math, Kiros and Kids In The Way. I'd go so far as to say this is the biggest festival of its kind in Canada. The website has all the information. I wish I could go. The drama surrounding the lineup has been intense; apparently Starflyer 59, Terminal and Rock 'N Roll Worship Circus were all originally booked for this thing and bailed for various reasons, and Number One Gun are still being negotiated with. Oh, the headaches that must accompany organizing something like this. Oi.

Hurricane Katrina's wreckage continues to be front-page news worldwide; if I could quit my job for two weeks and fly down to help, you wouldn't even be reading this. Donate. Pray. Pray some more.

With Honor have a new record called This Is Our Revenge coming October 18th, and a new track from said record called 'Like Trumpets' has surfaced on their purevolume page The Connecticut quintet have developed a nice sense of melody - but the straight-edge hardcore fury will never die!!! [theprp]

Terror have given internet notice(of course it's true - it's on the internet!!) that they'll hopefully hit the studio next February to record their second Trustkill Records album. One With The Underdogs was a great record.

When Beloved broke up in January, rumours were already afoot of a new project called Advent - and now it's fact: check out some new music from Advent over here. Traces of Beloved remain(especially in the guitar parts), but dang, this new rock blows minds, baby.

The Juliana Theory may not have been able to play here in Ottawa last night, but they've released a statement concerning the horrific events in the southern US: "The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina is unfathomable. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this horrible tragedy. We hope aid reaches everyone that is still so desperately in need. To help, we are donating a portion of the proceeds from of our online merchandise sales to the American Red Cross. The donation will be sent to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund which provides disaster aid including food, shelter, counseling and other assistance to those in need. To donate directly, click here."

Lujo Records, which is based in Lousiana though head chief Erik Aucoin moved to Washington, DC a while back, had this to say: "Please keep the people of Louisiana in your prayers as my home state goes through this devastation. Thankfully my family is safe. As many of you know Lujo is still headquartered out of Louisiana despite my move to Washington DC. Starting right now a portion of all sales from the Lujo Webstore will be donated to the Red Cross. The percentage will start at ten percent; if we can, we will up it soon. I was supposed to be in New Orleans today...not sure when I'll see home again." [phantomtollbooth]

Slide guitar phenom Robert Randolph and his Family Band appear on Eric Clapton's new album, which was released this week; the band will also hit the tour circuit with this dude Santana(oh that guy) September 15th. A new album will be due next year. In the meantime, track down a copy of Unclassified(2004).

This is exciting this lovely Saturday afternoon: Caedmon's Call's next project, a continuation of 2003's In The Company of Angels called The World Will Sing, will be out in March of 2006. I'll buy it, like I've bought all their records for the better part of the last decade. Christian pop doesn't get better than this.

We were remiss in not getting this up sooner, like this morning when we were told: this afternoon's Juliana Theory show has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts. Bummer, no? Refunds are available at point of purchase, blah blah blah. If you're still looking for something to do tonight, The Architects are having their CD release party at Barrymore's with two opening acts, neither of which I can name offhand. Be there for nine pm, 323 Bank St.

There's no HTML tagging in this post thanks to Rachelle and her French computer.

September 01, 2005

Between the Buried and Me are dropping their new album Alaska next Tuesday on Victory Records; you can demo two new(and outstanding) songs over here. Very few bands mesh technicality with melody and aggression this well. The second songs reminds me a little of Extol. BTBAM will touring this fall with The Black Dahlia Murder(who also have a new album out, and it's really good from what little I've heard). [hxc]

So now it's confirmed: after taking the rest of this calendar year off, Society's Finest will hit the studio to do their first full-length in five years. I personally am very excited.

There's another option for Hurricane Katrina donations over here, if you're so led.

Following the first leg of touring on their highly-successful Redemption Songs album, Jars of Clay have announced the second installment, with Chris Rice, Sara Groves throughout and author Donald Miller(Blue Like Jazz) on selected dates(apparently Rice will not be appearing on Miller dates):

Every Time I Die's new album Gutter Phenomenon is out, and as an ongoing testament to the popularity of the formerly-underground metal scene I came of age in, the record's sold over fourteen thousand copies, landing it in the Billboard Top 200(#71). [TE]

You like action figures? You like My Chemical Romance?? I do!! Both!! And now those two wonderful worlds have collided, with the full complement of MCR action figures(not to say 'dolls') hitting shelves this fall!

This, however, has me more excited: Beloved's last show took place this past January with Underoath, Glass Casket and Classic Case - oh, and over two thousand kids, and the DVD, Kiss It Goodbye, will be out in November, and I will be purchasing it. The show took place in the band's hometown in North Carolina.

Heads up if you're in Toronto, Minnesota, Illinois or Wisconsin: Dashboard Confessional has been tapped to open for the almighty U2 in your areas:
Mon 09/12/05 Air Canada Centre Toronto, ON
Wed 09/14/05 Air Canada Centre Toronto, ON
Fri 09/16/05 Air Canada Centre Toronto, ON
Sat 09/17/05 Air Canada Centre Toronto, ON
Tue 09/20/05 United Center Chicago, IL
Wed 09/21/05 United Center Chicago, IL
Fri 09/23/05 Target Center Minneapolis, MN
Sun 09/25/05 Bradley Center Milwaukee, WI
What, Toronto gets four shows and we here in Ottawa, who've waited since 1985 to see U2, get ONE? Geez!

Check out some photos of Ottawa lads For the Mathematics ripping it up in Toronto over here.

oooOOooo, buzzgrinder has a new - and colourful - layout!!

A band that's caught my ear lately is Cartel, on The Militia Group out in California; power-pop is always a great thing this hack writer, and Cartel feed my jones quite nicely. Check out some songs over here.

plastic.com recently issued a list of their idea of 'perfect' albums - solid all the way through, no filler. Some of my particular faves from their list:
Zao, Where Bood and Fire Bring Rest
Jimmy Eat World, Clarity
Helmet, Meantime
You know, Helmet put out a new record earlier this year, and I'm guessing it tanked hugely, because I haven't heard a single thing about it since. Interesting. Anyway, email your list of 'Perfect Albums' to us here at sweetdisaster and we'll slap them up.

The Kick(toured with Blindside, big indie faves) are now operating under the name Gasoline Heart - and interestingly, John Fortson(ex of Squad 5-0, man do I miss them) is now with GH. Good to know.

Pluto Records wrecking squad Imperial(go read our review) have put up a new track called 'Drinking Wine' on their myspace. It features some Bleeding Through-ish synthesizer and a little singing. Decent. [lambgoat]

Metal beasts Cryptopsy and Despised Icon will be here in Ottawa(among a slew of other places) opening for Suffocation October 30th at the Capital Music Hall. The rest of the dates can be researched over here.

Doomriders(featuring Converge's bass player) and Coliseum(featuring a great big dude named Ryan) will put out a split on Level Plane Records November 8th; there'll be a new song from each, plus each band contributing a Danzig cover, not that I care about Danzig. [theprp]

There's a new e-card online in honour of The Juliana Theory's upcoming album Deadbeat Sweetheart; go listen to it and then c'mon out to the show tomorrow afternoon!

Fine purveyors of fine European metal Himsa will now put out their new album Hail Horror early next year on the Prosthetic label.
