From the Indie Vision Music camp, some news concerning their latest release from Forgotten Arrival: With first listen you'll probably be assuming that this band is some incarnation of pop punk that existed years ago, but listen further and you'll realize that you've stumbled on to something fresh and unique. Part melodic punk, part screamo, and part rock 'n roll and yet entirely FORGOTTEN ARRIVAL. This band is young yet they share more music influence then the majority of bands their age. From the energetic and intense track 'Stacie' to the catchy, sing-a-long chorus of 'Take Him Home' to the standout melodic track 'Unveil', you'll soon be caught up in this album's addictive melodies and unrelenting harmonies. There is more depth to this band than just the casual "I love my girlfriend"-type punk rock; evident are songs that touch on death, pain, scene politics, worship, and a closely held faith. There is more to this band than just youthful exuberance. There is a passionate and energetic drive to be more than the typical band you;ve all heard before. Forgotten Arrival will be taking one city at a time on their quest to bring the fun back into to Rock. For fans of: Brand New, Rufio, Senses Fail and Finch.

Y'all heard it here first. Check out another IVM band called Dismissed while you're at it; for all the details check indievision's website.

If you've never heard Stu Dent of Deepspace5 fame, you need to, and here's the place: illect, soon to be a powerhouse of real underground hiphop. Will they explode into a huge commercial success? More than likely not. Do they mean more than most mainstream-success hiphop? Oh yeah.

Some upcoming Ottawa shows, thanks to Scallen @ punkottawa: The Transit, hometown lads, making a stop here on their cross-Canada tour tonight, the 30th; Final Word(ex-A Death For Every Sin) invading from MTL Oct. 4th at Club SAW, Between The Buried And Me Oct. 7th at Bumper's; Rufio on the 8th at Babylon(that'll be a fun show); Raised Fist on the 11th also at Babylon(that'll be a HUGE show); and the newly-signed-to-a-huge-label Rise Against on the 19th, along with Most Precious Blood and Silverstein. I wonder if I'll be able to go to ANY of these. *sigh*

From sporknews: after playing the kinda-successful Canadian edition of Inside Out Soul Fest earlier this summer, Rebecca St. James is taking fest-mates downhere out on tour next month. I'd go see that show.

sd.com staffer Flikkema'll be all over this one: an interview with his favourite band, Moneen! Kenny Bridges is a funny lad. "Wrath of the Donkey", indeed. [decapolis]

There are loads of new live shots at junkedcamera; the list is lengthy, so get your rear in gear.

A nice long news digest for the kiddies.

I was reading this here over at our Ottawa compatriots onegoldenspoon, and it seems that during the Quo Vadis show a couple weeks back, guesting with the band was none other than Alex Auburn from the legendary Cryptopsy. I woulda killed to see that!

If you're a subscriber to Bandoppler mag(and after issue Numero Uno with cover lads the Blood Brothers who wouldn't be?), you'll wanna read this: "Due mostly to unforeseen red-tape [b.s.], BANDOPPLER #2 will be a tiny bit late hitting stores(early October), and a little bit later going out to subscribers(mid October). We cannot apologize enough for this gaff! And we're working our butts off to correct it asap. The only bright spot in the situation is that once we get things straightened out for this ish, it won't happen again with future issues. Again, I am really, really sorry that we have to make our wonderful subscribers wait a bit to get #2."

It's no news by now that Zao are back in action and plugged into the E-Town Concrete//God Forbid tour; but what IS news is that post-that, the band are soldiering on, having been added to one of this year's best tours: Further Seems Forever, along with Beloved and Armor For Sleep. Dates so far can see over here. [hxc]

It's now official: Shai Hulud are over. I'm glad I caught them live at least once, mere weeks ago here in lovely metropolitan Ottawa. Quoth the band: "The music, lyrics, and concepts that were to make up the next Shai Hulud album will see the light of day next year, just under a different name. You will not be disappointed. Information on the new name and material is on its way." End quoth.

If you live and breathe for Contemporary Christian Music, check this out; Third Day and industry legend Toby Mac(who puts on a great live show) will be hitting seventy-five cities next year. [cmcentral]

This kinda sucks for all of us NOT living way the heck out in Hawaii: October 18th will see Hawaii Rapfest 2003, featuring performances from Christian rap acts like - hold it together now - KJ-52, Sup the Chemist, Tunnel Rats and L.A. Symphony. Daaaaang. I would kill to go to that. For info if you're rich and/or live on the rock in the Pacific, here are the details.

Some hot news from the Slick Shoes camp: the lads from SoCal will be hitting the tour circuit with seminal 'Christian' punks(quotes ours) MxPx, following with another jaunt with Catch 22 and the awesome Boys Night Out. Check out the band's website for all the smack. [buzzgrinder]

Long Island's The Movielife are over. Doh!

Behold: new Project 86 material. [theprp]

This just in: Billy Talent brings the rock.

Mark Fisher at 1340mag has a slew(well, six) new pieces of journalistic excellence up, including articles on Onelinedrawing and current buzzband Damone.

pastepunk: perhaps the smartest, funniest 'zine out there. Highly recommended.

Here's some big news that's already been leaking in select places: Rancid will be in Ottawa for what I believe is the first time November 20th at the Capital Music Hall(formerly the Liquordome). Showtime is at seven, and you better believe this will sell out, so get your tickets ASAP. If anyone is aware of Rancid being here before this, email me at itacs@hotmail.com just for my own edification.

Well, aren't WE looking sharp! Congrats to the web team here at sd.com, consisting of Sirs Travis Lee and David(or Jacob) Flikkema, depending on where he is. We have the new Dashboard Confessional review just in to Editorial HQ, so look forward to that, and I'm presently cranking the new As I Lay Dying monolith on Metal Blade Records, and you can we'll present our take on that as well. All for you, our loyal readers.

Got an email from Facedown Records today; here's the main thrust: they've formed a sub-label within their own organization called Strike First Records. I quote: "Strike First was created as a way to help develop new and up-and-coming bands. A way to help bands get their music out to as many people as possible and to help them get on the road and a good foundation to grow off of. Facedown is going stronger than ever right now, and we are happy that we now have a little bit of free time to help out more bands that we are into." Noble ambitions indeed. More info can be had right over here. Their first release is the Wolves In Sheeps' Clothing EP from Sinai Beach.

Pluto Records' With All Sincerity are tearing up the tour circuit, as evidenced by this itinerary. Catch 'em if they come to your area. hopehardcore]

This is shameless self-promotion: Capgun Suicide is a new promo company run by a dude named Sam from a band called Foreknown, ably assisted by none other than our very own Josh Chambers. Check that action out.

According to the ever-awesome Sir Jorge at hardcorechristian, another great metal band has bitten the dust: Society's Finest have called it quits. Dang! However, the silver lining: vocalist Josh Ashworth is apparently the new vocalist for none other than Zao. How 'bout that?

Also from hardcorechristian, news from Trustkill Records: Hopesfall will be headlining a tour in October and bringing Hey Mercedes along for the ride. Right after that they are going to kick off a tour with the Ataris for a few weeks.

Korn has a new record out November 17th. Could you possibly care any less?

Pennywise will be in Australia in December/January for some big ol' radio festival going on Down Under. So if you're Down Under, check that out, even if their new record sounds identical to their last, oh, ten. [noisetheory]

Rancid's Tim Armstrong has lent his songwriting talents to - steady now - Pink's upcoming album. How odd is that?

This newsbyte from the folks at sporknews is interesting; apparently the new P.O.D. single went to #2 at Los Angeles' KROQ really friggin' quick. Check out the picture of them filming the video for first single 'Will You'. It looks like footage of Mars or something.

Behold: the first relevant review of the new MxPx record, which I will buy, just as I have all their previous efforts, even if whatshisface from Good Charlotte appears on it. Anyone read the Alt. Press cover story on them this month?

And our first plug for the mighty junkedcamera: the only place in Ottawa for all the live photos, all the time. They were down in Vermont for the Cave In/From Autumn to Ashes tour recently; expect shots of that very soon.

Congrats to my boy Pierre-Luc(formerly of Quebec's Arm Of Honour), who is now the new bassist for going-places band Forsaken Trust! [qchc]

If you wanna take a picture of Chris Carrabba at a Dashboard Confessional show, it'll have to be a disposable camera. If you're sixteen and female, you're freaking out right now, so read this here to set your emo-lovin' mind at ease.

Join our mailing list and be cool. We won't spam you or anything, we'll just throw bad diction and funny one-liners of news tidbits and contests and such your way. Shameless, i know.

SO!

By week's end, we're gonna have a for-real, full-fledged review section containing our takes on the latest from Watashi Wa, Dashboard Confessional, Beloved, the monstrous new one from Figure Four and others, all here for your entertainment and hopefully subversion. And if you don't know, October 21st will see the aforementioned Figure Four and Beloved, as well as the creators of one of last year's best albums, Norma Jean. Much props to Nick D.C. for bringing that tour to lovely metropolitan Ottawa.

Like You Really Care...

Duluth, MN's very own Foreknown is finally at rest after a few of the guys where taking some time off to recover from illnesses of odd varieties. In other news, Sky Trees in the Greenery Sceen are currently recording a two-song demo which they'll be throwing out in mailorder and live show fashion quite soon.

And don't worry kids, i'm still very buzzgrinder-savy. i'm the cute one of the crew (ha...)

Posted by travis at 09:56 PM | Comments (1231)

Hey, kids. First off, a plug for a 'zine I spent a lot of time working with who're in the midst of taking off: check out onegoldenspoon.com, who're bringing you the metal madness like nobody's business. Attawaytabe, guys. And gal.

So we don't have a lot going on just yet, but by week's end there will be interviews and CD reviews for you to read and enjoy and ruminate upon, and, oh yeah, hopefully glean something in the way of knowledge from. Thanks to all you kids who've gotten the publicity emails we sent out and dropped by; we'll have a message board/forum up eventually where y'all can congregate and talk smack. Oh, and we'll have an official news section too. This one is just temporary, which is why it looks rough. Y'dig?

This new Headbanger's Ball comp CD is apparently featuring Demon Hunter, who I don't like, as well as As I Lay Dying, who I absolutely adore with every fibre(fiber?) in my entire being. Check that action out. [hxc]

Also from the very in-the-know hxc.com crew, Zao are back together, writing a new album, and replacing Candiria on the E-Town Concrete tour. Like I'm surprised.

According to this thing over at cmcentral, the old Paul Colman Trio song 'Turn' has now been used on Dr. Phil's idiotic TV show. Will wonders never cease? The new PC3 is good, by the way.

This is interesting: Forbes magazine, they of the Richest In America annual lists, did an article on KJ-52, Uprok Records, and more and more and more. Odd. But cool. And while you're reading that, check out 'Breathe Slow', maybe the best song off the new Mars Ill record. I love it. [sphereofhiphop]

buzzgrinder rules. Simple as that.

Big changes in the Shai Hulud camp; I just saw them here in Ottawa a couple weeks ago and they destroyed Babylon. Check this out for details.

Extol are touring with Opeth in Europe! Awesome. [theprp]

As you read this, Project 86 are mixing their upcoming record, Songs To Burn Your Bridges By, and I WILL own it, even if it's only available online or some craziness.

Just so you know, the Hatebreed-headlined show last week, part of the Rise of Brutality 2 tour, absolutely killed. Madball, who I'd never heard before, blew my mind, and Terror is always a blast. The two metal bands were kinda lost in the mix; Babylon Nightclub isn't the greatest venue for such endeavours.

We here at sd.com(well, me anyways) share an affinity for French vanilla creamer with the great crew at Long Island's pastepunk. Go there. Immediately. Haste! HASTE!

This webspace is probably superfluous.

There are hundreds if not thousands of online magazines out there, not to mention the ambitious types who actually do the print media thing, all devoted to covering music and making their mark, and there's really nothing that separates us from the rest of the pack, but here we are anyway, to sing and dance and entertain the kids. This is something we love to do, and we're doing it.

When I say 'we', I mean it. I know or care little about web design - just never got that particular bug - and when I conceived of starting another 'zine, obviously I needed help. Mr. Travis Lee down in Wisconsin and Mr. David Flikkema here in Ottawa are sweetdisaster's intrepid two-man web crew, and they deserve almost all the credit for what you see here. The lovely Ms. Steph Torrealba was a devout supporter of another online endeavour I did previously, and her enthusiasm is why she's staff here, and more than likely a better writer than any of us. Lastly, but not leastly, Mr. Josh Chambers, though he doesn't return phone calls or reply to emails, is around somewhere too.

We hope you like it. Thanks for dropping by. Tell your friends, family, scenesters, plants.
